Two Things That Are Not a Service Call
- If you smell gas, leave the house. Do not flip switches, do not touch the thermostat, and do not go looking for the leak. Get everyone outside, then call 911 and your gas company from outside. Spire is 800-582-1234 on the Missouri side, Kansas Gas Service is 888-482-4950 on the Kansas side. Call us after the house is safe.
- If a carbon monoxide alarm is sounding, get everyone out and call 911. Carbon monoxide has no smell. Do not wait to see if it stops on its own.
Four Things Worth Checking
Some of these we get paid to drive out and flip. We would rather you check them yourself and keep the $100.
The thermostat
Set to HEAT, target temperature above the room temperature, and the fan on AUTO rather than ON. Then put fresh batteries in it. A dead thermostat battery looks exactly like a dead furnace.
The switch on the furnace
There is a switch near the unit that looks like an ordinary light switch, often on the side of the furnace or on a nearby joist. It gets flipped by accident more than anyone expects, usually by somebody carrying something down the stairs.
The breaker
Check the panel for a tripped furnace breaker. Flip it fully off, then back on. If it trips again right away, stop and call us. A breaker that will not hold is telling you something.
The filter
Pull it out and hold it up to a light. If you cannot see light through it, that is your problem. A clogged filter starves the furnace for air until the high limit shuts the burners down to protect the heat exchanger.

My furnace is running but the air coming out is cold. What is that?
Usually the burners are not staying lit. A dirty flame sensor is the most common cause and a clean and reset is $125. A failed hot surface igniter is next at $250. It can also be as simple as the thermostat fan being switched to ON instead of AUTO, which blows room-temperature air between heat cycles. We will tell you which one it is before we charge you for a part.
Why does my furnace start and then shut off after a few minutes?
That is short cycling, and it is usually the furnace protecting itself. A clogged filter chokes airflow until the high limit shuts the burners down, so change the filter first. A dirty flame sensor does the same thing on a shorter cycle. If neither fixes it, the diagnostic finds it.
Should I repair it or just replace the furnace?
Depends on the age of the unit and the size of the repair. We publish both numbers so you can decide with real figures instead of pressure. Repairs are on the flat-rate menu and furnace installs start at $4,000 with 0% financing up to 18 months. Every install quote is free and done in your home.
